In September 2025, a basket festival was held in the town of Lichtenfels, Germany.
This annual event takes place once a year in this region and also serves as a craft fair where basket makers gather from across Europe.
Last September, the owner of 1basketry, Tomotake Ichikawa,
traveled to Lichtenfels to attend and conduct interviews.
The main reason for this visit was the connections formed at the World Wicker and Weaving Festival in Poland, which we have attended three times. In particular, we hoped to reconnect with Benjamin, a Germany-based maker we met at the 2023 festival, as well as Jeanny and Jefke from Belgium, a mother and son, who were also planning to attend this festival.
During the same event in Poland, we had the opportunity to speak with Manfred, the organizer of the German basket festival, and deepen our acquaintance. It was Manfred who kindly invited us, encouraging us to come and see the festival in Germany for ourselves.

Lichtenfels is located in the southern German state of Bavaria.
From Frankfurt, one of Germany’s major international airports, it takes about three to four hours by train with transfers to reach the town.
As it is not an easy destination to reach from Japan, in this special exhibition we will present and offer baskets from across Europe, while also sharing scenes from our visits to basket museums in Frankfurt and other regions of Germany, as well as the atmosphere of the Lichtenfels basket festival, so that you may feel a glimpse of the place.
In this journal, we plan to share our travel report together with many photographs and videos.
We would be delighted if you would join us in enjoying this basket-filled journey.

At this special exhibition, the baskets presented in our shop will include works by Benjamin and by Jeanny and Jefke, whose baskets were well received when we introduced them last year.
We will also feature, for the first time, the work of a maker from France—something we had long hoped to introduce for nearly ten years—along with traditional baskets newly encountered in the Catalonia region of Spain.

The baskets by the makers from France and Spain will be making their first appearance in Japan.
We warmly invite you to see and hold them in your hands at our shop.
Please also take a look at our short preview video.

We hope you will enjoy these as well.
