“The One Table” Exhibition—Sawagurumi (Walnut Bark) Baskets, from October 31　“ひとつのテーブル”特集展 -さわぐるみのかご- /10.31(木)より

With each passing rain, the temperature drops, and this morning’s chill carried a hint of winter.

In the special exhibition beginning tomorrow, Thursday, October 31,
we will introduce baskets made from sawagurumi (walnut bark),
whose warmth pairs beautifully with the layered clothing of autumn and winter.

As the title suggests, this is “The One Table” special exhibition.

“The One Table” exhibition refers to an exhibition and sales event held on the large table at the center of our shop.

We first held a display and sale of Chinese bamboo steamers in early October 2024,
and this marks the second time the exhibition has been held.

The word “one” also carries a meaning linked to the number “1,” which is used in the name of our new online shop, “1basketry.”

Though it is just a single table,
we hope to fully convey the presence and appeal of the materials and works brought together there,
as well as the strength and warmth inherent in the objects themselves.

Iwate Prefecture / Walnut Bark Storage Basket, Small, Inner-Bark Checkerboard Weave with Outer-Bark Rim ¥18,150 (tax included)

For the past ten years, our shop has been run as a permanent store, focusing mainly on baskets and sieves,
but around three years ago, we held two special exhibitions.
One of them featured sawagurumi baskets made by Mr. Sasaki.

That exhibition was very well received, and this marks the second sawagurumi exhibition.

Centered around approximately twenty basket bags, many baskets will be displayed,
filling the large table at the heart of our shop.

Most of the basket bags made by Mr. Sasaki are one-of-a-kind designs.
The number of basket bag variations he has created over the years easily exceeds one thousand.
Each year, we regularly commission Mr. Sasaki to make new pieces,
and have introduced a truly wide variety of baskets in our shop.

This time as well, the table will be filled with delightful baskets we are seeing for the first time—
new forms and sizes, designs combining the outer and inner layers of walnut bark,
as well as combinations with yamabudō grapevine and akebi.

In addition, a full range of our standard storage baskets—Medium, Small, Mini, Petit, and Mini Tray sizes—will be available,
along with basket brooches and azuma bags for basket bags.

On Sunday, November 3, during the exhibition period, Mr. Sasaki will visit the shop to give a live demonstration.
He places great importance on listening to customers and is also very approachable,
so please feel free to speak with him.

Unlike the previous special exhibition of Chinese bamboo steamers,
this exhibition will initially be held only at our physical shop in Minami-Senju, Tokyo.
(Some items are planned to be offered later through our online shop.)

From the wide variety of sawagurumi baskets on display,
